The full-back made a deadline-day switch from Premier League outfit Crystal Palace to Celtic, and the loanee has already left a mark in the brief time he’s been part of Scottish football.
Jeffrey undoubtedly meets the criteria:
Since taking over from Ange Postecoglou in 2023, Brendan Rodgers has consistently emphasized his intention to add more physicality and strength to this Hoops squad, and Jeffrey perfectly aligns with that vision.
Schlupp’s commanding presence has been fascinating to observe recently, as he introduces a completely different dynamic compared to what we’ve grown accustomed to with Greg Taylor over the past few years.
With no significant competition to challenge him, the left-back position has essentially been a lock for the former Kilmarnock player, and many have been eager to see more depth and rivalry in that area of the team.
Given that Greg and the club have yet to agree on the terms of a new contract, the possibility of a permanent move to Paradise for Jeff remains open, should he choose to pursue it.
Kieran Tierney’s return is already secured:
With Kieran Tierney’s return finalized during the January transfer window, there’s no question that the Bhoys will be stronger in the left-back position moving forward.
However, Tierney won’t be able to feature in every minute of every match, and his playing time will need to be carefully managed to ensure he performs at his best upon his highly anticipated return to the club.
With Taylor still unsigned to an extension, Michael Stewart believes it’s an obvious decision for the club and Jeffrey to join forces on a permanent basis next season.
Speaking on the Scottish Football Social Club podcast, he said: “You know, that’s what’s intriguing about Schlupp—he can push forward. He’s very comfortable moving inside, which aligns with how Greg Taylor and the team prefer to play.”
Schlupp adapted to the system instantly:
“He’s slotted into the system right away—seamlessly. You mentioned the Tierney deal being done. I’m fairly certain I saw Peter Lawwell discuss it in the accounts, confirming the agreement for Tierney’s return. So, from Jeffrey Schlupp’s perspective, it’s a no-brainer. You’re either sitting idle at Crystal Palace or up at Celtic, competing in the Champions League against teams like Bayern Munich, potentially winning trophies, and enjoying your football.”
“I’d expect Celtic to propose a deal to sign him.”
Stewart believes this will be a question the Celtic hierarchy and Brendan Rodgers will pose to Schlupp at the end of the season.
“And by summer, I’d imagine Celtic will present a deal to try and secure him,” he said.
“His decision boils down to, ‘What better option will you have?’ You might not play every week, but with Celtic’s packed schedule, he’d still feature in a significant number of games—even with Kieran Tierney’s return.”
