After three and a half successful years wearing the Celtic jersey, Kyogo made the switch to Rennes during the winter transfer window.
Joining one of Europe’s top leagues was seen as a strategic move to boost his chances of securing a spot in Japan’s World Cup squad.
Despite scoring an impressive 85 goals for Celtic, the striker couldn’t guarantee his place in the national team. However, the move to France now appears to have backfired, as Kyogo has spent much of his time on the bench.
Having won 2 Scottish Cups, 3 Premiership titles, and 3 League Cups with Celtic, Kyogo now finds himself struggling for a starting role at Rennes. He has frequently been relegated to a substitute role or left out of the matchday squad entirely.
This raises the question: would Celtic consider re-signing their former superstar if the opportunity arose this summer? Kyogo could potentially be the perfect replacement for himself.
According to the Daily Record, Michael Gannon commented: “For £3.5m, do you go and buy him back? Where else are you going to get a £3.5m player like Kyogo? It’s an absolute no-brainer.”
Celtic’s management has a history of making profitable transfers, bringing in talented players and selling them for higher fees. Kyogo was sold to Rennes for a fee believed to be around £10 million.
Reacquiring him at a reduced price could be a shrewd financial decision, especially as the club has recently been re-signing former players, with Jota being the latest example.
