The Rangers managerial situation continues to dominate Scottish football discussions, with Sky Sports’ Jim White stirring the pot with his latest take on the Ibrox hotseat.
Known for his insider knowledge at the Glasgow club, White has broken ranks from the usual speculation to champion an unexpected candidate – interim boss Barry Ferguson.
Since taking temporary charge following Philippe Clement’s dismissal, Ferguson has reinvigorated the Light Blues with some statement results that have forced a rethink about the club’s long-term plans.
White argues these performances warrant serious consideration from the 49ers ownership group when they make their permanent appointment.
“Of late, a couple of head turning results, of course, winning at Celtic Park and putting Mourinho and Fenerbahce out of the Europa League,” White said on GO Radio when discussing Fergie.
“So yeah, I think he’s got to be in the conversation when the 49ers are deliberating as they will be now. I mean, they will be getting their ducks in the row at the moment as to who they want and how they’re going to go about it.”
White acknowledges Ferguson’s legendary status among the Rangers faithful but questions how much weight that carries in boardroom decisions:
“I think Barry’s got to be a name in the frame. Of course he has. And he’s a fan’s favourite. But whatever that counts for at the end of the day remains to be seen.”
The interim manager has clearly made an impact, restoring passion and fight to a squad that had grown stale under Clement.
His ability to motivate the players for crucial fixtures has particularly impressed, with the Old Firm victory and European progress marking his tenure so far.
Former Rangers defender agrees with White about Ferguson:
White isn’t alone in his assessment, with former Gers defender Craig Moore also backing Ferguson’s credentials. The Australian international believes his ex-teammate has done everything possible to state his case for the permanent role.
“I think spot on. Jim, like he says, I mean, all Barry could do was come in and try and do the best he absolutely could,” Moore added.
“And it was whether or not he could convince maybe the board through results, getting to the last eight and obviously the last win against Celtic. If he could finish the season in a positive way, it’s certainly going to give him a nice headache. That’s for sure.”
As the season reaches its climax, Ferguson’s audition continues with each match adding weight to his unexpected candidacy.
What began as a caretaker role has transformed into a genuine managerial proposition, leaving the 49ers group with an increasingly compelling internal option to consider.
