Tottenham shed a few tears after securing another loan transfer for defender Djed Spence.
Spence joined Genoa in the January window after Daniel Farke broke up a disastrous spell at Leeds by complaining about tardiness and other disciplinary issues with Spence.
Now in Italy, Spence hopes to build a career in Serie A and prove to those in England that he can perform at a high level.
Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport, Spence hinted that he may be completely done with Tottenham as he is considering a longer loan spell at Genoa.
Djed Spence could leave Tottenham for good:
Spence has hinted in an interview with an Italian media outlet that he is currently interested in a long-term move to Genoa.
“I knew they were looking for me last summer. Now, obviously, the right conditions existed to complete the operation. I am satisfied. This is an important opportunity. I hope this can be the start of a long journey at a club that is on the rise,” said Spence.
“I have found a nice team and a nice place. I settled in quickly. They supported me in everything. Everyone in the locker room helped me. It’s a nice atmosphere here. I will start learning Italian soon. For now, I prefer to concentrate on football.”
New beginnings:
Tottenham will wish they hadn’t shelled out £20m for Spence in the first place, and in retrospect his little jibe at Neil Warnock now seems a bit silly.
However, this is a chance for Spence to rebuild and avoid the pressures of the Champions League, while still playing football at a high level.
Italy is a good league and Genoa is a good institution where he can hopefully flourish. Obviously he will have to impress to make the move permanent, but if he learns the language and settles in, that is a good start.
For Spence’s sake, we hope that this move will pay off for him.
