Dean Jones, who deals with transfers, claims that Tottenham want to sell Bryan Gil to finance the transfer of another striker in the summer.
Spurs have had two decent transfer windows, signing a number of players who have immediately established themselves and helped the club to a great season.
Over the summer, they signed James Maddison, Guglielmo Vicario, Micky van de Ven and Brennan Johnson, who have proven to be fantastic players.
Last month they also signed Timo Werner and Radu Dragusin, and while Dragusin hasn’t had a real chance to impress yet, Werner has already contributed a couple of goals.
However, they want to continue strengthening their squad as the club has already identified several targets, including Raphinho from Barcelona and Nico Williams from Athletic Bilbao.
However, Jones believes they will have to sell their fringe strikers before they can sign a new striker and cites Bryan Gil as a player who could be transferred.
He was heavily linked with a move away from Hotspur Way last month but ended up staying at the club.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Real Sociedad made enquiries about Gil’s loan deal in January and even had “secret meetings” with Spurs. However, no deal was reached.
Jones believes Tottenham must prioritise his sale in the summer if they want to bring in a big-name striker.
He told GiveMeSport:
“Bryan Gil has a lot to prove if he wants to have a future at Tottenham beyond this season. Personally, I don’t see that happening.
“He’s the one who really needs to be looked at in terms of the impact he will have at Tottenham because I think Bryan Gil’s departure is necessary to make room for another exciting striker to come in.
“They’ve been linked with Raphinho this week and I know they’ve also been looking at players like Nico Williams at Athletic Bilbao. They have also been linked with a few other players.
“It seems to me that they will move him on at this stage because he has certainly had opportunities to prove himself so far but he hasn’t been able to.”
Gil still hasn’t opened his wicket for the Lillywhites and it seems unlikely that will change any time soon, especially after the recent arrival of Tim Werner at the club. Werner is expected to play regularly on the left side of the attack.
A departure will be the best option for all parties involved. It will allow the talented striker to revive his career elsewhere, and it will also give Spurs a financial injection to spend on a big-name striker like Rafinha.
