Marc Albrighton weighs in on the debate about Jamie Vardy’s future at Leicester City.
The striker is a club legend, but his contract expires in the summer.
Until an official decision is made, his future with the Foxes is uncertain.
The 37-year-old’s importance to the first team has declined in recent seasons as the experienced player has made just 21 appearances in the Championship, including only nine in the Premier League.
However, Leicester fans last weekend voiced their support for Vardy to stay and chanted for the former England international to stay for another 10 years.
Albrighton calls for Vardy to stay:
Albrighton has claimed that Vardy still has plenty to offer the Championship team at this stage of his career.
The winger has been teammates with the club captain for almost a decade and believes his future should remain at the King Power Stadium.
“[Vardy] is still as energetic as ever,” Albrighton said, reports Leicestershire Live.
“That applies both on and off the pitch. He’s fantastic and he’s been fantastic for this football club over the years.
“I think there’s more to him. We’ll see how he goes at the end of the season.
“I definitely think there is more in him.
“I think he is still a great player for this football club. He’s been a great servant.
“It’s his work ethic, his drive, everything.
“He’s been tremendous for the club and he epitomises everything we want to do and everything we want to be.
“It will be sad when he finally goes, whether it’s this year or any other time.
“I don’t see why he can be written off. To be honest, I find it incomprehensible.
“Whenever he has been out of the team, he has always come back and proved himself.
“I would never write him off.”
Leicester City’s league position:
Leicester are currently top of the Championship table, and with last weekend’s 2-1 win over Watford, the team maintained their gap to the chasers.
Enzo Maresca’s charges lead second-placed Southampton by 11 points, although they have played a game more than the Saints.
The gap to third-placed Leeds United is 12 points, with 15 games to play before the end of the campaign.
Leicester are aiming for automatic promotion to the Premier League at the first attempt after being relegated last season.
Leicester’s next game is a home match against Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday night.
Vardy’s future should be at Leicester:
Even if Vardy doesn’t start every week, he still has a lot to offer the club.
His experience is invaluable, so he is a big asset in the dressing room.
There’s been a lot of turmoil in the team over the last year, so if he stays he’ll help the fresh faces to catch on.
Vardy has become synonymous with Leicester, so it would be strange to see him leave under any circumstances at this point, barring retirement.
