David Moyes will have the final say on a possible contract extension, Football Insider reports. The Scot is in his second term at West Ham, but the club has failed to win in its last five games recently.
They were beaten 6-0 by Arsenal London in their last match, and bookmakers have labelled the 60-year-old as the third most likely Premier League boss to be relieved of his duties. Former Chelsea boss Graham Potter was already one of the hot favourites to replace Moyes.
In the latest twist to the story, however, reports from Football Insider said that a new contract was “ready” in December, but Moyes has still not given a definitive answer on the situation, even though his current contract is due to expire in June this year.
Despite the change in results – which saw a defeat against the Gunners as well as a 3-0 defeat against Manchester United – the latest reports suggest that an offer for an extension is still on the table and whether or not it is accepted is largely up to the former Red Devils boss.
Sources have confirmed that the offer would be for two-and-a-half years, which would mean he would stay at Stratford until June 2026, and the club’s owners will now be looking to meet with the former Real Sociedad boss to get a definitive answer. Moyes had already expressed his intention to stay with the Kladivars in December, confirming: “We will do it (the contract). I don’t see many problems with that.”
This is the former central defender’s second stint with the Irons, having previously managed the club for just six months in the 2017-18 season. The second time around, Moyes guided the team to a Premier League record 65 points, finishing sixth and qualifying for the 2021/22 UEFA Europa League.
The following season, Moyes led the team to a seventh-placed finish and a Europa League semi-final, the first time in the club’s history that a team has secured a top-seven finish in two consecutive seasons. Moyes was, of course, also the manager of the West Ham team that won the UEFA Europa League Conference, where the club remained unbeaten in the entire tournament, beating Fiorentina 2-1.
