Djed Spence has addressed the talk surrounding his alleged lack of professionalism during his loan stint at Leeds United, dismissing claims that it was blown out of proportion.
The right-back joined Leeds on loan from Tottenham last summer but faced challenges with injuries, limiting his appearances. Leeds, unexpectedly, cut short his loan and sent him back to Spurs in the winter transfer window without a replacement lined up.
Manager Daniel Farke suggested issues with Spence’s professionalism, including claims of indiscipline and poor timekeeping. Spence refuted these suggestions, emphasizing that some aspects were exaggerated, attributing most of the criticism to his lack of regular playtime.
“I don’t think that’s fair at all,” Spence told The Athletic. “I don’t necessarily agree with what they said. But in football, this is how it is: you have to keep your head down, keep going and eventually prove people wrong. Some of it is a bit blown out of proportion. You can be late once and if you’re not playing, it’s a problem, and if you are playing, then it’s not a problem.”
Despite the challenges faced during his loan spell, Spence remains resolute in his commitment to proving his critics wrong.
Leeds brought in Connor Roberts on loan from Burnley in January to fill the void left by Spence’s departure from Elland Road. The defender’s determination to overcome setbacks and demonstrate his capabilities remains a focal point as he looks to make a positive impact in his football journey.
