Tottenham Hotspur supporters made their feelings known about Aston Villa’s Matty Cash during Sunday’s game at Villa Park, with chants directed at the player.
The animosity between Spurs fans and Cash stems from previous incidents, notably when Matt Doherty sustained a serious knee injury in April 2022 after a challenge from Cash.
The ill-will continued this season when Cash’s tackle on Rodrigo Bentancur in November resulted in the Uruguayan midfielder missing weeks of action with an ankle injury.
The Villa full-back’s challenge took place after Bentancur’s return to the starting XI following a lengthy absence due to an ACL injury. Villa went on to win that game 2-1, further souring the relationship between Cash and Tottenham supporters.
In the recent fixture at Villa Park, where Tottenham secured a statement 4-0 victory, the away fans took the opportunity to remind Cash of the scoreline.
“Villa Park, it can be a very noisy place and they made it a very quiet place,” the Football.London journalist said.
“All you could hear was the Spurs fans for long periods singing, ‘Matty, Matty, what’s the score?’ towards Matty Cash.”
The chanting reflected the supporters’ desire to taunt Cash in a lighthearted manner, seeking retribution for past incidents. The victory was crucial for Tottenham, bringing them within two points of Aston Villa with a game in hand.
Despite the competitiveness on the pitch, the fans’ banter at Villa Park provided a moment of harmless fun, contrasting with previous instances where emotions had escalated on social media after Bentancur’s injury in November.
