Son Heung-min quipped about bringing Harry Kane back to Tottenham Hotspur after bagging a penalty against Newcastle United.
Spurs recorded a resounding win over the Magpies to bounce back from a five-game winless run in the Premier League. Son sealed the 4-1 rout from the spot to get Tottenham’s Champions League bid back on track.
The South Korean terrorised Newcastle throughout, tearing down the left flank with ease and also contributing with two assists. Remarkably, his penalty to complete the demolition was the first time a Spurs player other than Kane took a spot-kick since August 2021.
Tottenham are yet to be given a penalty this season so supporters had wondered who the taker would be following the 30-year-old’s departure. New club captain Son stepped up and made no mistake to comfortably fire past Martin Dubravka.
Speaking post-match, the forward joked about whether Spurs should re-sign Kane or let him continue with penalty duties. He said: “Shall we call Harry [Kane] back? I practised all the time, even when Harry was there. I learned from Harry. I hope so [more goals from penalties]. I hope we get more penalties.”
Son also spoke about his relationship with Newcastle counterpart Trippier, who spent four years at White Hart Lane before leaving in 2019. The defender failed to deal with Son all evening as the Spurs talisman ran ragged against the Magpies.
“Tripps is one of my closest friends and he had a fantastic time here,” he added. “When you play against each other, there are no friends. He is an amazing defender. It doesn’t matter what position the team needs, I will do my best.”
