View – As difficult as it is to admit, West Ham needs to replace Top-class star man and SELL him Off if Julen Lopetegui is to succeed more than David Moyes at the London Stadium

Julen Lopetegui faces a significant decision regarding West Ham United goalkeeper Alphonse Areola if he aims to make a lasting impact in East London.

Areola joined West Ham on loan from Paris Saint-Germain in 2021, with the move becoming permanent in 2022 for a fee of around £8 million.

Initially, the Frenchman played second fiddle to long-serving goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski but was promoted to first-choice at the start of the 2023/24 season.

The 31-year-old has put in some solid performances since taking over the number one spot, having made 138 saves, 11 punches, 20 high claims, and two penalty saves across 31 Premier League games last season.

Areola’s shot-stopping ability is undeniable, and he has been crucial in preventing heavier defeats for West Ham, particularly during a season where the Hammers allowed more shots on goal than 18 other Premier League clubs.

However, despite his clear abilities, Lopetegui may need to make a bold decision regarding Areola’s future. There were even reports linking the Frenchman with a move away from the club during the summer transfer window.

With West Ham transitioning to a possession-based style under Lopetegui, the limitations in Areola’s game may come under greater scrutiny.

While Areola is an excellent shot-stopper, his struggles in two key areas could hinder West Ham’s development under their new manager. First and foremost, his distribution has been problematic.

The Frenchman is often uncomfortable with the ball at his feet, an issue that becomes more evident when the team looks to build from the back.

Lopetegui’s tactical vision will require a goalkeeper who can act as an additional outfield player, contributing to the team’s possession game. Unfortunately, Areola does not fit that profile.

Secondly, his command of the penalty area leaves much to be desired, particularly when dealing with crosses.

In a Premier League where physicality and set-pieces play such a crucial role, having a goalkeeper who can dominate the box is essential. Areola’s lack of presence in this regard is another concern.

Given these deficiencies, Lopetegui may need to consider bringing in a goalkeeper who is not only comfortable in possession but also more commanding in aerial situations. This type of goalkeeper is vital if West Ham are to progress and adopt the playing style that Lopetegui desires.

Though it might seem harsh, it may be time for West Ham to part ways with Areola, whether in the January transfer window or next summer.

His shot-stopping has been admirable, but in order for the Hammers to truly progress under Lopetegui, they will likely need a more complete goalkeeper who can help implement the manager’s tactical approach.
