Anthony Gordon has admitted he was “quite close” to joining Chelsea and working under Thomas Tuchel in the summer of 2022.
The 23-year-old winger, who played a crucial role in Everton’s Premier League survival that season, was heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge following his impressive performances.
Reports at the time suggested Chelsea had two bids for Gordon rejected, the second believed to be around £45 million.
Frank Lampard, then Everton manager, downplayed the speculation, claiming the deal was never on the verge of completion. However, Gordon has now offered a contrasting version of events.
Speaking at an England press conference ahead of their Nations League clash with Greece, Gordon said:
“It was quite close, to be honest. I was desperate to go at the time and work with him (Tuchel) especially.
“I felt like my style would suit his style of play – the way he was playing at Chelsea was very exciting for me. It was a big opportunity for me that didn’t end up happening, and I’m looking forward to getting to work with him a couple of years later.”
While a move to Chelsea never materialised, Gordon eventually secured a £60 million transfer to Newcastle in January 2023.
Now, two years after the initial approach, Gordon has a fresh chance to link up with Tuchel, who was appointed England manager last month. Although Tuchel won’t officially begin his role until 2025, Gordon is already anticipating the partnership.
The winger’s desire to work with Tuchel stems from a conversation the pair had during the 2021/22 season. After Everton’s crucial 1-0 victory over Chelsea at Goodison Park, Tuchel approached Gordon, leaving a lasting impression.
Gordon recalled:
“I spoke to him after a game we played against Chelsea when I played for Everton. I shook his hand and… he said some really complimentary things to me that I’ll keep to myself.
“I felt a lot of warmth from him which then, in turn, made me really want to play for him, but I didn’t get that chance.”
With Tuchel now poised to take the reins of the national team, Gordon’s long-held wish to learn under the German tactician could finally become a reality.
