David Moyes could be set for a sensational return to management, with reports suggesting the Friedkin Group may appoint him as Everton’s next manager once their takeover is complete.
Journalist Alan Nixon revealed via Patreon [8 December] that Moyes is “happy” to wait for the right opportunity, having already turned down a Premier League job earlier this month [Graeme Bailey, 3 December].
Nixon added that the Scotsman could emerge as a strong candidate for the Everton role in the coming weeks.
Moyes, who last managed West Ham United, left the London Stadium at the end of last season after guiding the club to UEFA Europa Conference League glory in 2022-23.
A return to Goodison Park, where Moyes previously enjoyed an 11-year spell in charge, would certainly be an intriguing prospect. The idea of Moyes leading Everton into their new stadium next August carries a romantic appeal.
The 61-year-old is far from just a safe choice. At West Ham, he consistently overachieved, rebuilding his reputation as a manager who can deliver results under challenging circumstances.
However, some Everton fans may feel uninspired by the potential appointment, believing Moyes’ best days are behind him.
The old adage about never returning to an ex is often cited, but there are few realistic candidates with a better track record to stabilise Everton.
For now, Sean Dyche remains in the Goodison dugout, and any managerial changes are unlikely until the Friedkin takeover is finalised. Until then, speculation about Moyes’ return remains just that – speculation.
