Nottingham Forest put up a determined effort to secure Santiago Gimenez during the summer transfer window but ultimately came up short.
In the closing hours of the window, Gimenez decided against joining Forest, opting to remain with Feyenoord instead. Manager Nuno Espirito Santo supported the decision not to push for another striker, placing trust in the squad’s current options.
That faith has been repaid by Chris Wood, who has delivered an impressive 10 goals this season, with Taiwo Awoniyi serving as the backup. While Forest could revisit the idea of signing a striker in January, whether Gimenez remains a target is uncertain.
Santiago Gimenez confirms why he rejected Nottingham Forest
Gimenez has been in outstanding form this season, including a goal in Feyenoord’s thrilling 3-3 draw against Manchester City in the Champions League.
His performances have solidified his reputation, making him a sought-after player, and Forest may revisit their interest in the future.
The reason for his decision to reject Forest, however, appears straightforward: he prioritized playing in the Champions League and further developing his game at Feyenoord. Speaking to TNT Sports Mexico, Gimenez explained:
“Yes obviously, I think everyone in Mexico knows that it was true that they came and wanted to pay for me what the club was asking but in the end, I decided to wait one more year here at Feyenoord because I had the possibility of playing in the Champions League, I had the option to grow up here and also another team came in but nothing materialised.
“It went all the way until the last day but nothing came of and I decided to wait, Nottingham (Forest) gave me one last day to say yes or no, we decided to say no.”
Forest might have missed the boat on Gimenez
If Forest manage to qualify for European competition this season, a move for Gimenez could become far more realistic. However, without that qualification, their chances of landing the Mexico international appear slim.
Gimenez has scored 10 goals in 14 appearances this season, showcasing his potential and hinting that he may have outgrown the Eredivisie.
Securing players of his caliber during the January transfer window is always challenging, and his rising profile suggests he might now be out of reach for Forest.
His recent comments indicate a preference to wait for a move to a top-tier club, which could effectively rule Forest out of contention.
While they may have been close in the summer, the Reds might now find themselves competing against Europe’s elite for his signature.
