Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is determined to refine his squad during the January transfer window, with several players already securing moves for more regular game time and others set to follow.
One significant move nearing completion is midfielder Luis Palma’s loan transfer to La Liga side Rayo Vallecano, which will keep him in Spain until the end of the 2024-25 campaign.
According to Estadio Deportivo, negotiations are in the “final stage,” and an agreement has been reached for the Honduran international. The report states that the 24-year-old is expected to travel to Madrid next week to finalize the deal and undergo a medical.
Palma joined Celtic in the summer of 2023 for £4 million from Aris Thessaloniki and has made 46 appearances since his arrival.
While he showed flashes of brilliance, including goals in the Champions League against Feyenoord and Atletico Madrid, he has struggled for consistent game time this season.
A potential goal against Lazio was narrowly ruled out by VAR, adding to a challenging campaign.
Reduced Role at Celtic
At Celtic, Palma has found himself behind Daizen Maeda, Nicolas Kuhn, James Forrest, and Yang in Brendan Rodgers’ attacking pecking order. Having made just 10 appearances this season, the winger has been reduced to a bit-part role in Glasgow’s east end.
With his opportunities limited, a loan move has been on the horizon for weeks. Vallecano sees potential in Palma and plans to utilize him both as a No. 10 and in wide positions.
The loan agreement reportedly includes a purchase option, giving the 24-year-old a chance to secure a long-term future in Spain if he impresses.
