Manchester United’s standout player Harry Maguire has shared additional thoughts on his last-minute winning goal against his former team, Leicester City, during Friday night’s match.
The center-back scored with a header from Bruno Fernandes’ free kick, effectively sealing the game’s final moment to secure a 2-1 comeback victory for United.
Leicester fans were left frustrated as replays indicated Maguire was offside when the cross was delivered. However, with VAR not in use until the next stage of the FA Cup, the goal was upheld, much to the dismay of Ruud van Nistelrooy.
United will find out their next opponents in the FA Cup’s fifth round when the draw is conducted on Monday evening. The match is scheduled for the weekend of March 1.
This isn’t the first time Maguire has been at the heart of a dramatic late goal in a clash between United and Leicester. In December 2017, while playing for Leicester, Maguire faced United in a Premier League match at the King Power Stadium.
United seemed to be in control, leading 2-1 with Leicester reduced to ten men after Daniel Amartey received a second yellow card.
However, Maguire stepped up in the 94th minute, slotting the ball past David de Gea to secure a surprising 2-2 draw for Leicester. This moment remains etched in the memory of the now-United defender.
On his Instagram stories, Maguire posted a split image: one side depicting his equalizer for Leicester against United in 2017, and the other showing his decisive goal against Leicester on Friday night. He captioned the post, “Roles reversed.”
Maguire made the move from Leicester to United in 2019 for a record fee of £80 million. His time at Old Trafford has been a mix of highs and lows, including losing the captain’s armband.
Recently, however, Maguire has shown improved form under the guidance of Ruben Amorim, despite the team’s overall challenges. He has been a consistent presence in every Premier League game available to him since the new manager’s arrival, with Friday’s goal marking his first since Amorim took charge in November.
